ABOUT US

Our History

Our story begins in the vibrant community of 1880’s Brooklyn, NY. It was here that the legacy of Cassidy Funeral Home was born with the founding of John J. Gallagher Undertakers on North 8th Street. John and his family of Irish immigrants had recently settled in Brooklyn hoping to pursue the American dream. They built a sanctuary for grief and remembrance. John J. Gallagher Undertakers would become a beacon of solace and support in the community. Soon after, a second location was established in Brooklyn on Aberdeen Street. This facility was called John J. Gallagher Sons Funeral Home. At the time, Brooklyn was not yet a borough of New York City, but rather a separate neighboring city. It wasn't until 1898 that Brooklyn was consolidated and became a part of New York City, forming the five-boroughs that we know of today. Yes... that's how long we've been around. Although a lot has changed since these humble beginnings, our unwavering commitment to providing exceptional services has stood the test of time.

In 1925, John's son Arthur carried the torch and began a new chapter of the funeral home's story in Richmond Hill, Queens. It was here that he founded the Arthur A. Gallagher Funeral Home, keeping his father’s values and legacy alive. Located on the service road of the Van Wyck Expressway, this facility would witness over six decades of history, serving countless families with care when they needed it most. In 1929, families throughout the nation were struck by the devastating onset of the Great Depression. When times got tough, Arthur A. Gallagher Funeral Home stood as a pillar of perseverance and compassion. The Gallagher’s were committed to providing quality affordable funerals for all families that requested their services. This commitment is one that Cassidy Funeral Home has proudly kept to this day.

In 1950 Arthur A. Gallagher’s Daughter Elizabeth, and her husband, William H. Cassidy would take over the family business, embarking on a new era. They would continue operating at the Richmond Hill location until 1986. In the warm embrace of July 1974, Elizabeth and William were beckoned to the town of Mineola, NY. They acquired the James Newman Funeral Home at 156 Willis Avenue and renamed the facility Cassidy Funeral Home. We have been located right here in Mineola, NY ever since.

In 2001 our country witnessed one of its greatest tragedies with the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Soon after, the war in Afghanistan commenced and William H. Cassidy’s son William (Bill) J. Cassidy was there to answer the call of duty. Serving in the US military from 2001 to 2004, Bill Cassidy had two deployments as an Army Ranger in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. After returning home, he became a registered volunteer with The Gallant Few, a revolutionary veteran support network. Today, Cassidy Funeral Home is proud to honor the lives of veterans, and support all family and friends of those who have served.

In 2006 Bill Cassidy graduated with a degree in business from Nassau Community College, before returning to pursue a degree in mortuary science. It was there that he met his soon-to-be wife Susan. Bill and Susan graduated from the mortuary science program in 2008, and became licensed funeral directors in 2009. The torch had been passed down once more, as Bill and Susan became the new owners of Cassidy Funeral Home. Susan would go on to serve as the Chairperson of the Programs/Education committee for the Nassau Suffolk Funeral Directors Association. She would also become a proud mother to future funeral directors Emma and William R. Cassidy.

Today, Cassidy Funeral Home remains in the trusted hands of funeral directors Bill and Susan Cassidy. They proudly serve the communities of Mineola, Williston Park, East Williston, Garden City, Albertson, Garden City Park, New Hyde Park, Carle Place, Westbury and all surrounding areas. Cassidy Funeral Home is proud to be family owned. Every family that enters our doors is met with personalized attention, as we recognize that each family's journey towards healing is unique. We are committed to preserving the legacy we have built over five generations and we hope to serve this lovely community for many years to come.
