It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Marie J Hollwedel. Marie passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning July 2, 2026. She was 92 years old.
Marie loved a good puzzle and was an avid reader. She loved movies, game shows and might have been the world’s biggest Downton Abbey fan. Smart as a whip, she knew almost every answer on Jeopardy, she would have made an excellent contestant. She was a fantastic cook (as was her mother), and she was proud to share her recipes with her family. But what brought Marie the most joy was doting on her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Fiercely independent into her mid to late 80’s, she loved having company over, sharing a good joke or story, spending time with family, and making sure the grandkids were happy and spoiled.
Born in Brooklyn on September 4,1933 to Anna and John McDonnell, she was the oldest of 3 siblings (Anne Schmelke and John McDonnell). Marie spent several years of her childhood at boarding school in Vermont, returning for high school in Brooklyn. In 1957, Marie had her son Gerard Hollwedel. As a single mother, she rose to the top of her profession as an executive secretary for presidents at both RCA and then GE. In retirement, she was extremely happy to devote her love and attention to her family.
Marie is survived by her grandchildren, John (Nicole) and Jeanette (Steve), and her great grandchildren Shea, Brady, Justin, Colin, and Brianna.
