Dr. Jean Eunice Judd (née Schultz) passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on April 14, 2023 in the Palliative Care Unit at North Shore University Hospital where she had spent nearly all of her 40 year career as a Geriatric Psychiatrist. She is survived by her children Kathleen Judd and Corey Judd, her son-in-law Martin Barclay, her three grandchildren Miranda, Perrin, Alexa, many nieces and nephews, and her beloved surrogate daughter Iris McKenna. Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years Granville Eugene (Ron) Judd in 2000, her eldest daughter Kim Barclay (nee Judd) in 2021, and her brother Ralph Schultz in 1983.
Jean was born in Weehawken, New Jersey, on January 12, 1929, the daughter of Wilhemine and Otto Schultz. Living just across the Hudson River, Jean had many opportunities to visit New York City and many other places with her brother and adoring Aunt Martha.
While pursuing medical school, Jean discovered her passion for psychiatry, which continued throughout her nearly 40-year career. She completed undergraduate studies at Bates College, where she met her life-long friend Lyla Barclay, whose son Martin later married Jean's daughter, Kim, in 1990. Jean completed medical school at Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and became a pediatrician. After working in pediatrics, Jean returned for additional training and became a psychiatrist at North Shore University Hospital on Long Island.
Upon completion of medical school Jean met the love of her life, Ron, on a blind date and they married within 3 weeks of meeting! They soon had 3 children and a menagerie of pets, whom they raised on Long Island. Jean was adventurous and curious, often traveling to different countries and marveling at their natural beauty and cultures.
Jean was a devoted member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, serving on and/or chairing a myriad of committees and as well as serving as president of the congregation for 2 years. Jean was a member of the UUCSR choir well into her 80's and her love of the arts extended to Broadway plays and classic opera, something which she frequently shared with her family. Jean volunteered often at the Inn, and in the 1980s volunteered extensively with Habitat for Humanity. She also enjoyed needlepoint, designing embroidery pieces for her home and for the people she loved. For physical fitness Jean was extremely fond of swimming 30 laps in any pool.
Jean was a pillar of her community, loved deeply by long-time family friends, members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, her three nieces Christine, Andrea and Roberta (2017), and their extended families. She was loving and tenacious, and her spirit will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched during her lifetime.
