Francesca Palumbo

Francesca Palumbo of Mineola, NY, died on February 3, 2022 at the age of 93. Francesca was born August 2, 1928 in Cicciano, Italy, the oldest of 6 children. When she was a young girl, World War II began and soon took a devastating toll on her town and her family, when a bomb was dropped, killing her father at his workplace. Francesca worked to help her mother with the cooking, cleaning, and caring for her youngest siblings. In 1945, she married Francesco Palumbo when she was just 16 years old. They remained in Cicciano raising their 3 sons, until 1963 when they emigrated to the US in search of better opportunities. Francesca worked hard all of her life, spending long hours in a sweater factory and cleaning houses, before getting a job at Winthrop Hospital, where she worked until she retired in 1990. After retirement, she kept busy tending her garden, making homemade wine, and always cooking for family and friends. She was a spitfire, never hesitating to speak her mind and make her opinions known. She was a strong matriarch and the heart of her family. Francesca was preceded in death by her husband Francesco, her brothers Aniello and Saverio, and her sister Rosa. She is survived by her 3 sons, Leonardo (AnnaMaria) Palumbo, Luigi (Nancy) Palumbo, and Dominick (Isabel) Palumbo, as well as her sisters Angelina and Anna. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Francesco (Jennifer) Palumbo Michael (Maureen) Palumbo Luigi (Kristen) Palumbo Leonardo Palumbo Jr. Francesca (Gus) Spathis Stephen (Sarah) Palumbo Francesco (Jillian) Palumbo Nicholas Palumbo Rachel Palumbo Francesco Palumbo She is also survived by 15 great grandchildren.
