Dorothy Jean Alford

Dorothy J. (McNamara) Alford passed from this life at the age of 91 on June 9 with family by her side. Born in New York City in 1929 to John and Ellen (Durkin) McNamara who had both separately immigrated from Ireland and met in the U.S., she was the younger of two daughters (Helen). She grew up on the West Side of Manhattan and attended the prestigious Cathedral School for girls. After high school Dorothy was awarded an academic scholarship to Saint John’s University where she graduated with honors and was Editor of the college yearbook.  Dorothy worked in the print advertising, marketing and journalism industry in New York City and met her beloved husband Edward, a  FBI Special Agent  at a noon Mass service. They married and raised a family in Brooklyn, Stewart Manor and Garden City, spending a life’s journey together for 65 years. They especially enjoyed their last home together in Ocean Ridge, Palm Beach County, Florida. Dorothy was active in various women’s groups including the Catholic Daughters of America (St. Annes Garden City), where she served terms as Regent. Her passion was travel with husband Edward and together they visited destinations over four continents on extensive trips. She was also a competitive Bridge player. Dorothy was preceded in death by husband Edward, and daughter Frances who was lost while a Delta Airline Flight Attendant in a tragic airline accident in 1985. She leaves behind son Edward Jr. (Maureen) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, son John (Melinda) of Garden City, daughter Aileen Alford Pappas (Ken) of Dix Hills and 7 grandchildren. A brief Memorial Service will be at Cassidy Funeral Home, Mineola NY  on Monday June 14 at 9:30 AM followed by 11:15 Funeral Mass at St. Annes Catholic Church in Garden City (service streamed @ stannesgc.org ) Internment to follow at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
