Obituary for Elizabeth Feldstein

Elizabeth Feldstein, lovingly referred to as Wee Betty, Biff and Bibby, passed away on Sunday, November 21 at the age of 95 in Mineola, NY, surrounded by her children. She was born Elizabeth Condron on May 18, 1926, in Longriggend, Scotland, and was the second child of Michael and Annie Condron. Family was everything to Betty. She left high school as a teenager to care for her brothers and sisters during World War II. Before immigrating to the United States from Scotland in the late 1960s to make a better life for herself and her son, she served in the United Kingdom’s Woman’s Royal Air Force for 3 years and as a bus conductress for 20 years.

Once she arrived in New York at the age of 41, she was a nanny to families with young children until she met Harold Feldstein, with whom she married, had a daughter, and happily gained two stepdaughters. For 35 years, Betty was a machinist for Caddell-Burns before retiring in 2016. Always wanting to better herself, she went back to school at 78, taking adult education classes in computer science at Mineola High School, where she was the teacher’s pet. In her early 90s, she took up and fell in love with CrossFit (yes, you read that correctly, CrossFit). She loved starting her day at the Box, and no doubt brightened the days of those around her.

Betty was a loving mother, auntie, sister, friend, and role model to so many, both young and old. She had a warmth and kindness about her that was infectious, always hugging and holding the hands of people she just met. And, if you ask anyone what they will miss most about her, it’s most certainly her sense of humor and her stories. Her stories about her six weans (kids) in Scotland that she took everywhere, about her time on the buses or about that one time she drank too much champagne.

A friend from Scotland said it best when he wrote, “She was a legend. Many people say whiskey is Scotland’s best export, but those people just hadn’t met Wee Betty. She has touched so many lives with her hospitality, taking in all the strays from this side of the pond.”

Betty is survived by a son Gerald Condron, 63; a daughter Ann Margaret Feldstein, 51; a stepdaughter Cheryl Humphrey, 71; two dogs: Daisy, 10, and Bali, 4, a brother Harry Condron, 92; a sister-in-law Frances Condron, 86; and many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to Pick Your Paw Rescue or Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.
